Today I’m going to take you on the great adventure of making Fried green tomatoes. I changed this recipe from my great grandmothers original (mainly because some of the ingredients aren’t sold anymore)and I was very satisfied with the results.
Supplies:
Whisk
Measuring cups
3 Bowls/Shallow mixing dishes
5 inch deep Non-stick saucepan
Frying basket
Ingredients:
5-10 green tomatoes (organic preferably)
1 Cup corn meal (If you don’t have any cornmeal grits or Farina hot cereal works great as a replacement)
3 tbsp cornstarch
3 1/2 cups flour (Preferably not bleached)
4 eggs
1/4 cup buttermilk (I know this sounds gross but if you don’t have butter milk use 1/4 cup normal milk and 1 Tbsp vinegar, mix them together and let it sit for 5 minutes before using.)
1 Tsp paprika
1 Tbsp Garlic powder
1 Tbsp Onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Vegetable oil
Directions:
WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!!
Rinse your tomatoes under warm water, pat dry with a paper towel.
Slice your tomatoes to the thickness you desire ( I suggest 1/4 inch or thinner) and then set aside.
While you are prepping your ingredients, you should have your oil on the stove heating up.
Split your flour into two even parts (For those of you who cant do math that is 1 3/4 cups flour each.)
Place your two parts of flour into two different bowls/dishes
Add your eggs and buttermilk to the remaining bowl/dish
Add the cornmeal/replacement cornmeal to ONE of the flour dishes, along with all of the seasonings, Mix thoroughly.
Your dishes should be set in the order of Plain flour, egg mix, seasoned flour cornmeal mix.
Coat your tomatoes first in the plain flour, then eggs mixture, finally cornmeal mixture.
Drop in coated tomatoes into the hot oil and cook until golden brown.
Serve and enjoy!
