To celebrate the tenth random fact milestone, I have decided to write about something that is very near and dear to us all… Pizza!
Did you know that Raffaele Esposito was the man who invented pizza?
Pizza actually existed in the 1600s. Bakers in Naples Italy created quick and simple dishes similar to the pizza we know today; those “pizzas” were served to the poor, to which they ate while walking in the streets. The pizza we have now wasn’t invented until 1889. The pizza was made as a request from King Umberto and Queen Margherita because they were tired of eating a constant diet of French haute cuisine.
Raffaele Esposito made this pizza using tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and green basil to reflect the colors of the Italian flag. Queen Margherita approved of the dish and ever since then, (after years of Italian migrating and recipe sharing) pizza slowly became one of America’s favorite food.
