Despite popular belief and many, many children’s coloring books, buckles didn’t become a fashion trend until decades after the pilgrims left England. They were actually used as a symbol of wealth and high status due to how expensive they were. The settlers at the time were so poor, that they had to use leather laces to keep their pants from falling down, so the idea of putting a buckle on a hat seemed kind of wasteful. (And impossible)
